How Smaart Works

The process begins with an overall system evaluation. We consider system design and engineering, as it relates to the statistical space in which the system is installed. Next, we make an objective assessment of major system components, including consoles and/or DJ mixers, digital signal processors, amplifiers, and speakers. Measurements are then taken. The accumulated data is analyzed and utilized to establish DSP program parameters that will optimize sound system linearity.

The most important aspect of maximizing sound system performance occurs in the design and engineering phase. If a system is poorly designed, poor components are installed, or the space in which the system is installed is acoustically hostile, the system will invariably perform poorly.

The audio professionals at Sound Solutions are factory trained Smaart operators. We have years of experience in analyzing and optimizing sound system performance.

What is Smaart?

Smaart is an acronym for Sound Measurement Acoustical Analysis Real-Time Tool. The PC-based Smaart software program was designed to be used by audio engineers to optimize sound reinforcement system linearity. Since being introduced in 1996, Smaart has become the tool of choice for audio professionals around the world.

Real-time analyzers are capable of measuring sound energy (db) and frequency (hz). However, they are incapable of providing data related to the time domain, a crucial component of sound system analysis.

TEF (time, energy, frequency) analyzers allow us to analyze energy and frequency data as they relate to time. Early TEF analyzers were not well received or widely used by the professional audio community, because they were difficult to operate and cost prohibitive.

Smaart takes advantage of the PC's ability to perform fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). Fourier transformation takes a complex function and transforms it into its basic components: simple sine waves of varying amplitudes and frequencies. In the transfer function mode, Smaart generates a real-time snapshot of sound energy and frequency activity with respect to time.
